Goldman Sachs and McLaren Racing: Accelerating Toward a Sustainable World

By Goldman Sachs

Founded in 1963, McLaren Racing is the second-most successful Formula 1 team in the sport’s history.* Zak Brown, in his sixth season as McLaren’s CEO, is committed to bringing the team back to consistent podiums and a championship, as well as guiding the company to its 2040 net-zero carbon goals. McLaren is proud to be partnering with Goldman Sachs to accelerate toward its sustainability goals. In this video, Brown and McLaren driver Lando Norris sit down with Goldman Sachs’ Chairman and CEO David Solomon to talk about their journeys to the highest levels of F1 racing and what drives them to improve not just cars and racing, but the world.

Key takeaways

McLaren F1 racing is a team effort—from the developers working on cutting-edge automotive technology to the pit crew and from CEO Brown to driver Norris. Never has this been more critical than during the past year, which saw the biggest regulation-driven design and engineering changes in decades. That same partnership is happening between McLaren and Goldman Sachs on sustainability. “Partnership,” said Brown, “is working on the inside to build resilience.”

  • The greatest joys come from building something from the ground up: Norris said, “McLaren is the only team I’ve ever supported...It’s been my dream since I was a little kid. Being a part of a team that goes from, you know, struggling and being in a very tough position, to then winning races, I think that feels more deserved and special.”
  • Teamwork builds a winning environment: Brown said,It’s all about teamwork. It’s all about culture. It’s all about setting goals and objectives. We need to supply our great team with the latest and greatest, cutting-edge technology to enable them to do their job.”
  • Track tech has real-world impacts: In the early days of the COVID pandemic, McLaren and other F1 teams came together to design and build 10 years’ worth of ventilators in 10 weeks to combat a UK ventilator shortage. Said Brown, “We’ve helped save lives through deploying our technologies and know-how.” McLaren has assisted other companies in their sustainability efforts and even the airline industry with plane development.
  • Everyone podiums in the race to sustainability: McLaren has set 2040 as its target date—and Brown sees McLaren as both a leader and a follower to the carbon-zero checkered flag. “I think the answer is both. We have cutting-edge technology that we can deploy, not only within our Formula 1 and racing environment, but we do a lot of work with countries and other industries to share our knowledge and know-how.”

"The Goldman Sachs-McLaren partnership exemplifies the Firm’s commitment to working as a team with companies to help them attain the goals that are important to them—whether it’s giving their employees and executives peace of mind through tailor-made benefits or attaining their sustainability objectives."
